History

St. John's School, Marhauli, was established in the year 1987 under the aegis of the Catholic Diocese of Varanasi. From modest beginnings, the School has grown to become a center of academic excellence in the city. Father Peter, the first principal of the School, played an instrumental role in the School's growth and success. Over a period of more than two decades, the School has imparted education to thousands of students who have become successful doctors, technocrats, professionals and entrepreneurs. The School compares favorably with most modern schools in the state. In the year 2001, the School modified its dress policy for senior girls from gray pleated skirts to long grey-checked salwar-kurtas with a dupatta.[1]

Administration

The school is one of the three schools administered by the Catholic Diocese of Varanasi, the other two being St. John's School, DLW and St. John's School, Ledhupur. It is under the religious jurisdiction of the Bishop of the Diocese of Varanasi and receives active involvement of the Sisters of the Cross of Chavanod in its administration. The school aims at the education of the catholic community around and extends its services to the members of the other communities.

Curriculum

The school is affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination, New Delhi. It prepares students for the I.C.S.E. (10 year course) and I.S.C. (12 year course). The curriculum includes: English (Language and Literature), Hindi, Sanskrit, History & Civics, Geography, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics, Commerce, Accountancy and Computer Studies.

Hindi is taught from L.K.G onwards. English is the medium of instruction, communication and examination.

Extra curricular activities

St. John's School believes that a sound moral, physical and cultural training is as important as academic & scholastic instruction in preparing students for their role in life. Great importance is, therefore, attached to games, sports and physical exercises. Dramatics, debates, general knowledge and quiz competitions keep the students mentally alert and abreast of the time.
